BEHEMOTH Complete Work On 'Slaves Shall Serve' Video
July 24, 2005Polish death/black metallers BEHEMOTH have once again joined forces with Joanna Rechnio, one of the leading video producers in Poland (who also directed BEHEMOTH's "Conquer All" clip),to shoot a video for the song "Slaves Shall Serve" from their latest album, "Demigod". Due to controversial scenes in the clip, MTV has reportedly requested a "soft" version for possible airplay.
Commented BEHEMOTH mainman Nergal: "I'm still pretty pissed about [having to tone down certain scenes in the video]. I mean, check out all those hip hop or MARILYN MANSON videos. Are they any less controversial than this? I doubt it. I hate going to any compromise but what the hell, I'm pretty sure that most of the video channels (read: most liberated and tolerant ones) worldwide will play the unedited version. The truth is that I had this need to express myself in a more…extreme way. For me it's just another act of great transgression and manifestation of sincere and unrestrained ART. I guess that some of you, especially religious people, would find it offensive…but hey, I'm not here to please any of you but to eventually make up your minds. This is how I see things and how I want you to receive me. Like it or not, this doesn't really matter much to me. I did what I wanted and I'm damn proud of it. I felt like our statements in 'No Sympathy For Fools', 'Christians to the Lions' or 'Slaves Shall Serve' have already been misinterpreted many times, therefore making the 'Slaves' video essential to show our attitude towards all that has anything to do with Christianity (or in this case ANY stagnated, organized and institutional religions)."
Known primarily as a producer of rock and pop artists in her home country (Poland),Rechnio had never worked with an extreme metal act prior to her collaboration with BEHEMOTH.
"Since we've always striven for something more than being just another death or black metal band, we need to search in other genres to find inspiration," explained Nergal. "To be honest, I'm truly bored by most of today's metal videos. It's not about metal being cliché but how it’s all being approached. Joanna did a great job with the last one, 'Conquer All', but this time I think we went even further. First of all, I made the whole scenario script weeks in advance. A really solid and detailed one. I also had more experience and knew exactly what kind of effect I wanted to achieve with this video so I had more control over things. It seemed that there was more of what I call 'team work' between us and the director. This video speaks for it, I have no doubt. I also truly hope that most of extreme metal (and not only) fans will enjoy the effort we put in this one!"
Expect the worldwide premiere of the "Slaves Shall Serve" video in September.
